Hello, Hannah Culbert here, and as you may have guessed I'm an illustrator. I graduated from Minneapolis College of Art and Design in the spring of 2014, and have since been working in freelance illustration, graphic design, and product design, as well as exhibiting at several galleries, including Light Grey Art Lab. I've had the good fortune to work with MPLS / STP Clothing Co, Vestiges Inc, Studio NEXT, and Oneo Distrubution LLC, among others.
Currently I work primarily digitally, using Adobe Creative Suite, though I prefer to sketch traditionally. I also have a background working with india ink and in various manual printing techniques. As for the subject matter of my work, I enjoy doing research based projects and experimenting with the design aesthetics of other eras, Art Deco and 19th century woodblock printing in particular.
I'm a Minneapolis native and a huge fan of theatre, which is a great source of inspiration for my illustrations. Costume and mask design are especially exciting to me. I enjoy designing characters with strong silhouettes, and I also sculpt small masks out of polymer clay. The mythological and personal symbolism of various flora and fauna is another common theme in my work. I enjoy creating my own symbols based on research in biology as well. I've done a lot of work with insects, plants and marine life, particularly. I'm very passionate about mythology and folklore; I grew up with Greek mythology and have been reading folklore from the British Isles since middle school. The connection between science and myth fascinates me, and often draw on those ideas in my work.
As an avid reader and lover of stories, I want to convey narrative and immersive atmosphere in my work, whether it's costume design, product design or concept art. I'm always glad to answer any questions about my process or talk about creative opportunities, please feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
